After visiting Glasgow, we went camping to Loch Lomond, with nice views, but with annoying mosquitos!!! we couldn't have dinner properly and we had to go bed early, beaten for thousands of midges (the typical mosquitos of The Highlands)

This weekend we decided to go to Loch Lomond, but first, we stopped in Glasgow, where Ari was very nice hosting us. We had a fantastic night on Friday and we enjoyed the city on Saturday ( we were kids again playing in the Science Museum )

THE BORDERS: KELSO

The last stop in the Borders was Kelso, a nice town close to the river Tweed and with an abbey as well. The battery of the camera was runnig low and in Kelso died completelly, that's the reason for this few range of photos.

The biggest and more intact abbey in the zone is in Jedburgh. Although it was really impressive, we were a bit tired of abbeys, so we decided to become medieval habitants. Some customs were enough to change our aspect: Susanna as a lady-in-waiting and me as a savage warrior.

Small but really nice, maybe the most beautyful abbey in the area. You can perfectly imagine the live of the monks here, walking trough the ruins of the cloister or the dormitory.

Ohh!!!! Going by car is wonderful!!! In one day you can reach plenty of places. Here the view of the Tweed Valley between Melrose, Kelso and Jedburgh. You can see the Eildon Hills in the centre. From this point Walter Scott got his inspiration to write his famous novels.

On our way to the next abbey we stopped in this medieval tower, where a rich family used to live in the mmm... (I don't remember the century). Look at the small windows it has, just to prevent the attacks of outsiders, they were clever people. Seeing that the tower wasn't that good we decided to do some foolish things just to enjoy the visit (see Susanna as a Princess).

Used to walk a lot, that day we decided to be typical sightseers and stop in every single point going by car. That was a really short pause, in fact, no more than 5 minutes, but the view was worth.

Friday morning and Susanna and me went to pick up a hired car for our trip during the weekend. What can we do while we wait for the other people who are still working?? Lets go to the Borders, a region on the south of Scotland where the main attractions are medieval abbeys, similars to those which I can find reading the Pillars of the Earth. First stage, Melrose, a really tiny town with a magnificent ruin.

We had our last visit last week: Jordi was in Glasgow with his sister, and we invited them to spend two days in our flat.

We visited the city and went to the Free Tour, with a "crazy" guide and Jordi as a volunteer in some parts of it hehehehe

It was short but we really enjoyed the visit, and we could celebrate Jordi's birthday with a delicious cake made by Gerard :)

WHERE IS THE HOSTEL???

That was our question to every citizen from Whiting Bay. Our Lonely Planet Guide for Scotland told us that in that place there was a hostel, but not anymore!!! So, with our soaked tent we had to camp again. Luckily it wasn't raining and we could cook and eat outside, the menu was noodles, crakers with some cheese and an apple as a dessert. However, during the night, another storm came and the tent got wet again.

HITCHHIKING

We were on the schedule to take the last bus to go to Whiting Bay, where a hostel was waiting for us to sleep, but we didn't read properly the bus timetable and the last one ran just on Fridays. That meant that we had 16 miles (25km) until our next stop, quite a long way considering that was 7pm. So, the decision to get rid of the situation was to hitchhike. Three cars picked us up and at 7,30pm we reached our objective. I think we were really lucky!!! In the meanwhile we had some sun, so we decided to enjoy the views.

As you can see in the pictures we were not able to find the cave, our orientation got lost. However, the walk by the coast was really nice and we could see the cliffs, so "no hay mal que por bien no venga".

Our camera has an electronic timer to take pictures automatically. The funny thing is that each time we use it, the camera takes 3 photos. So, knowing that, we took advantatge of it and that's the result.

The next stop was in Machrie to contemplate some groups of stones from the prehistoric period. It was quite difficult to find them, so Susanna decided to go up a ladder and find out where they were, but it was pointless. Finally, after look around for a while, we got them.

After the whisky experience we went to Lochranza, an astonishing bay with a really old castle. Again, the weather was bad, so we had to lunch inside, but after the lunch came the first beams and birds begun to go out.

ARRAN WHISKY DESTILLERY

We needed to get warm, for that reason we decided to go to the Arran Destillery and taste some of their whiskies. You can not be in Scotland and not go to a destillery. To be honest, the whisky cream was superb!!!!

WET, WET, WET!!!

That was the weather we found in Arran, it wasn't raining, it was pouring water literally. We started walking at 7:30 pm and half an hour later we had to put up our tent to shelter from the storm. It was raining from 8pm til 10 am next morning, so we had to manage to eat, get changed and everything inside the tent. Quite annoying!!!

The ferry took one hour to got there but was nice. When we got off the ferry, and after five minutes walking, we found this signal "No camping" and our planning was to camp wherever we could find a place, so we broke a bit the law but doesn't matter because on our way we found more people camping.

Later on, after a deserved coffee it was tourn to chill out with a folk concert. A really good endind to a really impressive weekend.

A crowded barbeque was the start of the craziest night of the Festival. Around 80 people gathered around two fires trying to cook something before start drinking. After the barbeque, big party in one pub in the Old Town. Live music and liters of beer were the best ingredients to have fun.

We went to the restaurant where I work to have dinner. It was funny see Ferran making efforts to speak in English with Alex and Emma making efforts to speak in Spanish with Silvayn, jejeje. Mummy showed as well all her English knowledge thanks to all the years in courses in Barcelona. jejejej (I'm jokking). Finally, we asked for some whiskies. I adviced my brothers that the measure is really small in Scotland (25ml) but they didn't believme until the whisky arrived.

VISITING THE CITY

It wasn't bad. In one day we had time to go to the Edinburgh's Castle, wonder around the Royal Mile until the Scottish Parliament, have some haggis, neeps and tattis, fight in Calton Hill to remember the old times, go to Princess Street to buy some souvenirs and visit Dean Village and the Royal Botanic Garden after one hour walking under the rain (ja queda poc!!!!!). A full day of Edinburgh emotions!!!

Yesterday we went for the first time at one Pub Quiz, a really typical competition in most of the Edinburgh's pubs. The problem was that the questions were for expert people like which is the name of the hotel in the film The Shining, played by Jack Nicholson?? If anyone knows the answer has a free pint in Edinburgh. Obviously, we were the worst team ever, despite of our scottish partners.

Yesterday we went to the Beltane Fire Festival in Calton Hill to celebrate the begining of the spring. The ceremony takes 5 hours and it shows the fight between spring and winter. El temps passa volant, ja portem sis mesos a Edinburgh!!!! Sembla ahir quan sortiem de l'aeroport de Barcelona carregats com mules, plens de maletes i plens d'il.lusio per comencar aquesta aventura.
Conclusions d'aquests sis mesos:
1.- No ens hem equivocat escollint la ciutat
2.- No s'han de tenir manies a l'hora de buscar feines
3.- El nostre angles es acceptable (com a minim aixo diu la profe de l'academia, suposo per anirmar-nos)
4.- S'ha d'anar amb una ment oberta
5.- Si tens la possibilitat de marxar a fora un temps, no ho dubtis, compra el bitllet!!!!

Des d'ahir que el nostre portatil ha dit prou i no executa Windows, per tant, estarem uns dies de sequera al bloc. Esperem solucionar el problema el mes aviat possible i esperem que no ens costi un ull de la cara. Ara, de forma puntual, utilitzem el portatil dels companys de pis (en el qual no hi ha accents) per temes d'urgencia. Res, que la informatica te aquestes coses.

El divendres vam sortir amb els de couchsurfing a un bar que es diu Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Està decorat amb monstres i ambientat a l'epoca però lo més estrany del bar son els lavabos: les portes són aquestes llibreries i has d'anar apretant llibres fins que trobes la porta, el primer cop sembles tonto! jejeje

Tot i que podíem haver fet el mateix camí, vam decidir vorejar la carena en comptes de pujar-la, tot per no haver de tornar a fer els cims altra vegada, jejeje. De fet, va servir per veure altres parts de la serralada que no havíem vist. En resum, un bon dia d'excursió: bon temps, bones vistes i bones comanyies (les ovelles).

Volteta pel llac per obrir una mica més la gana i per trobar un bon lloc per fer el pícnic. Després de buscar i buscar, hem trobat un raconet fantàstic, amb sol i a tocar de l'aigua, per menjar alguna coseta: entrepans vegetals i de truita, una poma i galetes de xocolata (no poden faltar!!!).

3a PART: DESCENS A LA VALL

La baixada ens ha aportat una de les sorpreses més gratificants de l'excursió. Tot i que en el mapa ja ens indicava la presència d'un llac, no ens havíem fet a la idea de com seria el paisatge. Simplement amazing!!!! Les ovelles en han acompanyat durant tota la baixada, menjant i descansant (qui en pogués ser una).

Segona muntanya coronada a través d'un caminet que passa per la carena. Les vistes continuen sent espectaculars i, des d'aquest punt, pots veure pràcticament tota la serralada envoltant la vall, un dels millors llocs per anar a fer un bon picnic.

La primera etapa de l'excursió va servir per coronar el Caerketton Hill, la muntanya que acull les pistes d'esquí artificials d'Edinburgh. El millor, les vistes espectaculars sobre tota la ciutat i el Fifth of Forth, l'entrada de mar que arriba fins Stirling.

EXCURSIÓ A LES PENTLAND HILLS

Aquest és el recorregut que hem fet avui per les Pentland Hills, una serralada molt propera a Edinburgh. 4 hores de caminata i entre 10 i 12km de distància que han servit per descobrir un molt bon lloc per portar les pròximes visites.

GLASGOW IV - PEOPLE'S PALACE

Tarda de passeig pels Green Gardens i visita al People's Palace, un matxembrat entre mini jardí botànic, museu de la ciència i museu de la història. De les coses més curioses la pancarta en contra de la mort de treballadors a Espanya a la Guerra Civil per part del bàndol nacional.

Com no, no podia faltar la típica foto de les cares!!!
